As we countdown the weeks to the Active Schools Conference 2024 on Tuesday 26th March 2024, we have detailed what to expect from our workshops & keynotes that have been organised by the Dream Big Sports team.

With a range of themes planned from “Deep Dive” preparation to Outdoor & Adventurous, including lots of practical activities, we are confident that you will leave the event feeling inspired to take many brilliant golden nuggets of knowledge and information back into your school or organisation. Will Swaithes: Effective planning, assessment and preparation for a PE Deep Dive
In this two part workshop, delegates will be supported to consider how best to structure their curriculum to consider purpose, coherence and sequencing before discussing medium term planning (units of work) and then individual lesson planning to ensure relevance, engagement and progress. Unpicking what great assessment looks like in PE and what to expect from an Ofsted deep dive in PE will wrap up the session.

LuSu: Inclusive Physical Education
Make your PE lessons fully inclusive – a 60 minute workshop, exploring the communication and lessons learnt within the context of Primary School PE lessons. How to support pupils with additional needs and create an inclusive environment for all. Fun demo of practical ideas for sending & receiving skills, highlighting the importance of STEP and other models. Opportunity for Q&A, so please come with plenty of questions!

Beth Tweddle Gymnastics: Introduction to Primary Gymnastics
This workshop will be a snapshot into what, why and how to deliver primary school gymnastics! The aim is that teachers leave the session with insight into how they can develop the sessions that they currently deliver to make them more inclusive and progressive for every child. We will also cover skills to assure that everything being taught is suitable for all ability levels.

Swim England: The Importance of School Swimming in the Curriculum
Lorna Goldie, the Swim England School Swimming and Water Safety Development Officer, has devoted her career to enhancing the swimming attainment and water safety awareness of primary school children across the nation. Currently, Lorna has taken on the national focus of improving school swimming and water safety. Her passion for this cause is evident in her unrelenting efforts to promote and advocate for the vital life skills that school swimming and water safety programmes impart.

Her workshops will cover a number of key areas including:

  • Key Stage 2 Curriculum Outcomes & Dryside Provision
  • Priority of Safe Self Rescue
  • Affluence & Swimming Attainment
  • Swim England 10 Year Strategy Target
  • What Influences a Great School Swimming Scheme?

Enrich Education: Outdoor & Adventurous Activities

Yorkshire Sport Foundation: Creating a Physically Active School
This workshop will introduce delegates to the pioneering Creating Active Schools Framework (CAS) and how it is supporting over 250 schools nationwide to embed physical activity at the heart of school culture and ethos, spend their PE and Sport Premium more effectively and most importantly, get children more active before, during and beyond the school day.

Delegates will:

  • Gain valuable insights into the challenges faced when implementing a whole-school physical activity approach and how they can overcome these.
  • Explore the framework, using it to reflect on their own physical activity provision and action plans moving forwards.
  • Learn about nationwide case studies, resulting in them taking away lots of top tips to get children more active and strategies to influence senior leaders to use physical activity as a method to drive whole school improvement.
