Active Schools Conference 2023: Workshop Announcement

This years Active Schools Conference is set to be an action-packed day with a variety of workshops delivered by industry leaders from across the country.

The high quality workshops will celebrate the successes of PE and School Sport whilst working to create a physically literate and active generation of young people.

10:00 – 11:00: Will Swaithes – PE Deep Dive

This workshop will help you better understand and get ready for an Ofsted Deep Dive under the Education Inspection Framework (EIF). Whilst it is geared towards getting you ready for inspection, by sharing pertinent materials and highlighting aspects of Ofsted’s published resources/inspection handbooks that need to be understood. This session will also give you the chance to ‘train hard to race easy’ by getting you to share your responses to a number of typical Ofsted Inspector lines of enquiry with other PE leads on the day.

11:15 – 12:15: Michael Chamberlain – Creating Open Minds Through OAA

The workshop will focus on how to deliver successful OAA using your own site – For Class teachers, PE co-ordinators, PSHE co-ordinators, Learning Mentors and Key Stage Leaders. A workshop of practical ideas showing how to deliver effective OAA lessons whilst making the most use of your own site. This workshop will provide lots of ideas for you to design your own scheme of work throughout the school to fulfil requirements of the curriculum. All activities are currently used in schools successfully and can be adapted appropriately.

11:15 – 12:15: Creative Minds – Dance within the PE Curriculum

This workshop aims to develop the attendees knowledge of the range of practical activities which can be delivered in the context of dance, with a focus on curricular learning.

Workshops objectives:

  • Confidently deliver curriculum dance lessons.

  • Support children’s successful participation in dance lessons.

  • The confidence to design, deliver and adapt dance lessons.

  • Develop confidence, performance skills and teamwork through dance related skills and activities

  • Make dance more enjoyable for both teachers and children.

11:15 – 12:15: Aspire Sports – Physically Active Interventions

It’s vital we create accessible, engaging and inclusive opportunities for children and young people to be active. Physically active learning is one way of doing just that. Maths on the Move is a unique and innovative programme that uses physically active learning to improve confidence and attainment in maths. This workshop will explore the latest research in physically active learning, you will understand the reasons why children benefit from physically active learning and take part in practical activities to implement in your school setting.

13:30 – 14:30: Reah Coo – Improving Social, Emotional Mental Health Through Movement

SEMH is on the increase. It’s more important than ever to find ways to improve our whole school practice for SEMH, having staff that understand the dynamics of pupils with SEMH and the impact these challenges are having in the lives of each individual, their families and our schools. Join me as we explore the importance of movement for our social interactions, our emotional wellbeing and our mental health. This is a workshop that will not only give you tips and tools for the children and adolescents you work with, but it will challenge you to think about how movement can improve your own social, emotional, mental health.

14:30 – 15:30: LuSu – Inclusive Physical Education

LUSU are experts in inclusive sport and activity. Fronted by two passionate, energetic and knowledgeable individuals who are committed to changing the attitudes, techniques and skills of people within educational and sporting environments. The 60 minute workshop will focus on making your PE lessons fully inclusive. Exploring the communication and lessons learnt within the context of Primary School PE lessons. How to support pupils with additional needs & creating an inclusive environment for all. Fun demo of practical ideas for sending & receiving skills, highlighting the importance of STEP and other models. Opportunity for Q&A, so come with questions.

14:30 – 15:30: Will Swaithes – What’s in your PE teacher toolkit?

How well do you adapt your style of lesson delivery and give variety in terms of pedagogical approaches to ensure you maximise engagement and development of all students? This workshop will introduce you to The Spectrum of Teaching Styles and Models-based Practice to include Games-based approaches and Health Based Physical Education to help you ensure your offer is rich and varied.
