The Benefits of Dance!

So, just what are the benefits of Dance and why is it so important in schools?

Whilst dance is a good source of fun and exercise for children, there are also lots of other benefits when participating in a dance lesson at school. Not only is Dance a creative outlet for children and a great opportunity for them to release creativity, it also improves overall health and fitness whilst creating healthy minds, confidence and positive attitudes in the classroom.

Dance is also a compulsory part of the PE curriculum at both Key Stage 1 and 2, it consistently combines physical literacy with both imagination and creativity whilst also proving to be a very useful tool when devising cross-curricular work.

Children who regularly take part in dance lessons are able to develop crucial fundamental movement skills such as balance, agility and co-ordination as well as many others along the way. In addition, children can also develop their listening and concentration skills which are essential for primary school children. It is evident that Dance promotes these skills as children have to listen to music and instructions throughout their lesson.

Young people are at a delicate stage where self-esteem and physical confidence need to be instilled. We believe that Dance is a great way to boost self-esteem, improve overall mental health, enhance happiness, positive energy and body attitude. Taking part in regular dance classes at both primary and secondary level has a great amount of health benefits for children which include:

  • Improving range of motion

  • Improving overall cardiovascular health

  • Flexibility and muscle tone

  • Improving stamina

  • Increasing balance and coordination

Children often experience very high levels of physical activity when dancing during a lesson and teachers/coaches should expect to see significant improvement in their overall physical health and fitness.
